Our Story
Adventures of a Kiwi Family
Welcome to our journey to Nicaragua! March 2024, Todd, Flora, and teenagers Tasman and Evie, along with our spirited blue heeler, Kennedy. We embarked on the exciting adventure of moving countries from New Zealand to Nicaragua when we immediately began restoring this stunning beachfront property. With our landscaping expertise, we have breathed new life into this old gem, transforming it into a vibrant oasis. We have made many new friends from all walks of life in this safe and friendly country. Now we want you to join us in the next phase of experiencing the delight this surfing hotspot has to offer and everything the Nicaraguan culture affords.

World School
Our family has been on a journey of schooling change since 2019, and it has developed as the kids got older.
But we are keen to give back to the world travelers, an impactful rest and discovery of this Quizala location here in the central Nicaragua coast. By immersion into the community and language. We have made friends here with the locals as we are the only foreigners in the community. Our local friends who are cooks, builders, security, teachers, caretakers, musicians and officials. They have all been genuine and have made us feel supported. We are happy to have family's join our camps and experience a taste of Nicaragua or get in touch to do long term stays with local accommodation. We have already hosted many expat families living in Nicaragua.
My Family stayed at Rancho Del Tiburón, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Surfing, bon fires and the kids loved getting involved with making pizzas and cooking them in the pizza oven. Friendly host and we will be back!!

About Todd and Flora Banks
Kiwis in Nicaragua
"Life is full of surprises! Five years ago we could not have foreseen this move. But being that both us Kiwis are world travelers, it's not surprising. We both have a love for the great outdoors and a lust for adventure and culture."
Todd is nearly fluent in Spanish and is our camp cook! Especially with fire! Flora is a great organizer of fun activities and will make your stay comfortable.
The family has also been helping in the Quizala community. Flora and Todd both joined the Environment and Roading Committee, which quickly resulted in newly paved roads around the small beach settlement.
The whole family also participate in teaching English to the local primary school twice a week.
Todd and Flora have started up a buy-back-turtle-eggs sanctuary on the property.
"We succeeded in hatching one turtle this last season but this year we are now far more knowledgeable and you are welcome to sponsor this cause, using the link below."
Evie and Flora are looking into sponsoring a cycle-sponsor program for the local kids to use to travel to school.
"We have already donated one bike to a neighbor and it's helping him get to high school without relying on motorbike lifts from a community member."
We have also made great friendships with local expact groups, where our kids have joined beach volleyball and soccer teams, karaoke nights and supported pet rescue clinics.
"We now want to help those travelers that are stretching their wings to try our camps and meet the community that we love in this unique environment."

About Nicaragua/ Quizalá
Quizala is a beach settlement of holiday homes. Its location is 1 hr from the capital city of Managua. Fulltime population of about 200 people. The local service town Masachapa is 15 minutes with basic food stuffs, ATMs. Has a bustling fishing port and tourist restaurants. The bustling hill side city of San Rafael del Sur, 15 minutes away. You can buy all major things, banks and markets.
Quizala is a beautiful quiet location settled between two rivers and has one road in. It is surrounded by terraces and sugar cane plantations and low dry tropical regenerating forest.
Subtropical Nicaragua is a year-round destination with two distinct seasons: hot and dry from November to May and hot and wet from June to October, aka the "green season". The rains usually come in short, sharp bursts in the late afternoon, with plenty of sunshine the rest of the time; September and October are the wettest months.
Nicaragua is known as the land of volcanos and lakes and rightly so. Spanish is the language and cuisine is diverse from sweet sugarcane sweets, fish soup and plantain, beans and rice staples. Beautiful tropical fruit year round, mango, pineapple, watermelon and papaya is heaven to me.
Nicaragua is safe, we notice kids are all playing in our local streets kicking a balls and having fun, but get your own travel insurance.
There is always music, dogs, new business on the streets and colorful sights from the multi-colored homes.
Come and enjoy for yourself the genuine loving people!
